URGENT ATTENTION FOR 2012

I had a couple of emails well wishes for the start of 2012. One in particular that caught my attention and thought I would share with visitors to this site. Some might be pointers for your new year’s resolution if you don’t have one yet.

Health:
1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.
3. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.
4. Live with the 3 E's - Energy, Enthusiasm and Empathy
5. Play more games.
6. Read more books than you did in 2011.
7. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day
8. Sleep for at least 7 hours a day.
9. Take a 10-30 minutes’ walk daily. And while you walk, smile.

Personality:
11. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
12. Don't have negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.
13. Don't overdo it. Keep your limits.
14. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
15. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip.
16. Dream more while you are awake.
17. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
18. Forget issues of the past. Don't remind your partner with His/her mistakes of the past. That will ruin your present happiness.
19. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don't hate others.
20. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present.
21. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
22. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.
23. Smile and laugh more.
24. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

Society:
25. Call your family often.
26. Each day give something good to others.
27. Forgive everyone for everything..
28. Spend time with people over the age of 70 and under the age of 6.
29. Try to make at least three people smile each day.
30. What other people think of you is none of your business.
31. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your family will. Stay in touch.

Life:
32. Do the right thing!
33. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
34. GOD heals everything.
35. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
36. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
37. The best is yet to come.
38. When you awake alive in the morning, thank GOD for it.
39. Your Inner most being is always happy. So, be happy.

Campaign Warning by Electoral Commission of PNG

As the 2012 National General Election dates draws near for Papua New Guinea, there are already media publicity by the PNG Electoral Commission on the print and audio media about awareness on 2012 elections. Here is an example of a warning for intending candidates on early campaigning. That campaigning should not begin until the issuing of writs on the 27 April. It is common knowledge that in practical campaigning for some had already began last year 2011 and is now intensifying unofficially leading up the issuing of writs. Also on the radio is a jingle that’s becoming a familiar tune “Safe and fair elections” that has a modern touch of funky vibes to it.

Passing of late Mrs Anna Bishop

It was a moving funeral especially for those who personally knew Mrs Anna Torie Bishop. She is the wife of the Director for Funding and Disclosures Mr John Bishop. Mrs Bishop had been unwell over the Christmas period until she passed away on the 2nd January 2012. Mrs Bishop leaves behind a husband and two children Schneider and Christine. The funeral service was held at the Murray Barracks Chapel led by her local church from Morata. Her body is to be buried in Manus at Lopwah village. She was 45 at the time of her passing. One of the moving occasions was a poem written and read by the son Schneider it reads:

MUMMY
“Mummy was so kind and loving towards me.
The things she did and how she did them,
showed very clearly to me that she loved
me more than anything in the world.
She was loving, gentle, kind,
encouraging, influential, strong, intelligent…
words just cannot describe what she is to me.
She would do everything for me from the moment I wake
up from bed till when I go to sleep.
She would monitor my Every Move with concern.
She would ask what I was doing,
what I did and she would tell me what I should do.
I would sometimes yell at her saying ‘You Police oh?’
she would smile and tell me ‘mi mama ya’,
husat ben bai tokim na lainim yu?
I will surely miss her ways very much.
She was a ‘Super Mum’
I love you Mum”

Two new members to Koukou home

As we welcome the New Year, we also welcome two new members to the Koukou house. These two wallabies are orphans after the mother was killed whilst in the garden. Both their names are Charlie and Phineas. This adds to a bird called Tani. Charlie the tortoise ran away some time ago so the name was given to the wallaby instead.

The man that started it all

I had a glimpse of the resting place of “James Peter Subtino Solien” also known as “Jim Malay”. Though he has since past on, his name continues to live on over 10 decades. He was born on 1853 and died at the age of 70.Most of the people that directly knew him have since passed on and one would never know his personality and character. He came as a foreigner, got married to two sisters from Tatana Island had 20 children and never returned to his homeland. What striking to this day after four or five generations is that his Asian features continue to flow along the bloodline. Pictured his is grave site where it was commemorate in 1999. Porebada-Napanapa development plan

As the country moves into new year 2012 so too is the population of Port Moresby. With the LNG in the construction phase, activities along the Porebada, Napanapa site continues to experience increasing heavy traffic. The congestion every month or so is getting worse. NCDC in conjunction with the Port Moresby chamber of Commerce are already engaged in the future planning of the affected communities along the above mentioned areas. New Year 2012 at Koukou

As we celebrate the New Year 2012 in our own way, back here in Papua New Guinea it was a low key event as many residents kept it at their own back yard. The skies of Koukou were filled with flares and music all throughout the night. Though the day was very wet, the night saw a dry celebration until day break when heavy downpours marred any new year’s outdoor celebration. The major fireworks were at Lamana Hotel. 2011 year in review

2012 is fast approaching and as we bid farewell to 2011, all I can say is WHAT A YEAR!..A roller coaster ride which saw sweet and sour taste of life. 2011 summed up was a productive year.
Some achievements :--) Move away from tenant to landlord- if you know what I mean. Had aunty and uncle moved in with us –reconnecting the broken family chain. Get to know dad’s side of the tree. Trying a bit of Tiri Kuimbakul principal. –It did generate some very interesting results though. Visited the ruined Rabaul town and got a glimpse of where dad grew up. Jamie started off in a new school and elevated to 1.1 –This is the time where his front teeth are falling.. hheehehee!! Anyway to cap it off, Ian’s won a job at Gobe, Kim’s cousin visits his mum and witness their long time dream becoming a reality. (See separate story). Finally the bottom is complete huuuuraaaayyy!..all in a year's work. Oh before i forget, have a new toy... just watch the graphics, notice any changes?
Looking forward to a new and challenging year ahead.

Travel Air Resumes Flight

Joining the family of third level airlines in Papua New Guinea is Travel Air. Owned by a Papua New Guinean businessman this company is based in Madang. The company started receiving its first aircraft in mid August this year (2011) and are set to receive others in the coming months. At the moment centers covered are Port Moresby, Madang, Hoskins and Rabaul. Reservations are now open and flights have commenced. Starting fares ranges from K325 to K340. Dream come true

Kim's cousin sister who resides with us was overjoyed as she saw the tractor driven into the koukou. It was her late husband's dream to have a tractor for the family. The tractor brought tears of joy and sorrow for both the widow and her brother (Ilagi) Over the weekend her children including other relatives gathered at the house to celebrate and also reflect what has come and gone as well as the future.It was also a family reunion that has brought them all together after the passing of their late father. The event went through the night and finally ended with a family meeting before departing for the village at about 11 pm. The tractor arrived the next morning at about 10am in the village. click here for more pictures

Motorized bicycle

The name says it all. It’s a normal bicycle fitted with an engine. This latest innovation is currently hitting the street of Port Moresby. Assisted by an engine, the bicycle goes to a max of 30km/hr at top speed. Fueled by zoom the engine is best suited for hilly environment or mountains. If you’re lucky one would spot a sample either along badili or Ela Beach as the base is back at Varokou Constructions office or to be precise Varovaro next to Kila Baracks. There are 100 more shipping into Port Moresby in early 2012 so keep an eye out. Apart from the Motorized bicycle, there is also the G-Wheel or put simply motorized skating and the Jet board. Jackson's Airport facelift

One could hardly miss the upgrade the terminal at the Jackson's International Airport is currently going through. At the moment the food court and the cop shop is made nicely into what you would normally find at most international airports. The overhead shades brings that modern touch into canopy technology.

Dual celebration

This week saw two events. One was an early birthday for Krystal and the other was Ian’s new occupation. Krystal’s birthday falls on the 14th December but due to her travel to Townsville, we had to celebrate it here in PNG than usual. For Ian, he had won a job with one of the LNG engaged contractors up at Gobe in the Southern Highlands Province. He departed the next day after tendering his resignation with Seeto Kui. There were lots of food and drinks to go around. Everyone enjoyed the moment.More pics available on Face_book

Global Recordings Network

I was searching for a particular item one day on the internet and stumbled across a very interesting website. It is called Global Recordings Network (GRN). Much like the Summer Institute of Linguist(SIL) their primary mission is to capture all the different language around the world in audio format for distribution in ones mother tongue or dialect. Accompanied with flip charts the audio gives a visual insight for clear understanding to those who are illiterate. Joy Ridderhof founded the work of Gospel Recordings in 1939. Joy was a single missionary in Honduras in the 1930's but was forced to return to the U.S. due to ill health. Her missionary heart was still with the mountain people she had left behind. Although poor and illiterate, these people had responded to the gospel and were delighted to hear God's Word.
As Joy prayed for them, an idea came to her. She remembered how phonograph records had played in the villages, blaring out songs in English and Spanish. If only she could make a record with a gospel message and Christian songs in Spanish, then it could stay with the people to repeat over and over the words she could no longer say to them in person.
In late 1938 the first record was produced and sent to missionaries who would take it into the mountain areas. The response was amazing and soon requests were coming from many Spanish-speaking areas for copies of that record. In 1941 Joy received a request for a Navajo recording from missionaries to the Navajo Indians. Joy's decision to record this second language was a major landmark in the history of Gospel Recordings, opening the way to a global outreach that would eventually touch the ends of the earth. Gospel Recordings today is committed to fulfill the vision that God gave to Joy Ridderhof.
GRN has been established in Papua New Guinea and works in close partnership with the SIL. There are currently over 30 establishments around the world. Aaron Choulai, VADA and the Tatana Village Choir

This stunning collaboration between musicians from Australia and Papua New Guinea is led by Papuan/Australian jazz pianist Aaron Choulai - a 25-year-old albino prodigy, who now flits mainly between Melbourne and New York, having recorded three albums for prestigious US jazz label Sunnyside Records. The 16-voice Tatana Village Choir, from the Motuan village in PNG's Central Province, performs Peroveta Anedia (Prophet Songs) - traditional choral music sung in intricate modal harmonies with soaring, interweaving parts. Choulai brought the Choir and Melbourne jazz collective VADA together as an exciting musical collaboration in 2007 for the film We Don't Dance For No Reason [Ai Na Asi A Mavaru Kavamu], created for the 2007 Queensland Music Festival. The Choir are proud representatives of Motu culture and the traditions of Peroveta Anedia, brought to their island by United church missionaries as a means of bridging bible stories and traditional tribal music, though the sound eventually moved beyond the church into everyday culture. Accompanying the choir in performance is Choulai on piano at the helm of VADA, featuring Carlo Babaro on saxophone, Eamon McNelis on trumpet, Rory McDougall on drums, Shannon Barnett on trombone and Tom Lee on bass.

Aaron Choulai and Tatana Village Choir will perform "We Don't Dance For No Reason" is presented as one-off performance this Friday 18 Nov at Melbourne Recital Centre.

"We Don't Dance For No Reason" is a very special project- the Tatana Village Choir are extraordinary on stage, full of joy and energy. and their sound is like nothing you'll ever hear (unless you happen to be in a fishing village on the coast of PNG on your way to church). Great jazz artists are collaborating on the show directed by Papuan/Australian pianist Aaron Choulai. The music is interspersed with stunning film pieces made by Peter Szollosi which show the beauty and struggle of life in PNG.

The show is part of a double bill with Iconic Songs featuring Archie Roach, Neil Murray and Shane Howard- another special show where these three amazing artists share the stories behind their iconic songs. Madang Airlines PNG Accident

In last months tragic plane crash images of the crash were circulated. For those who missed out heres a couple. There was also alot of tribute and dedications to the victims. The government offered K500 000.00 to the victims. A preliminary report was released however a full report may take a year or two to be completed. The preliminary report suggested that there was a mechanical fault.

Iaramas Album Launch

This is the launch of the Iaramas Album - the Cairns-based Milne Bay Group, formerly, "Island Sounds" (who initially released an album back in 1992). Two known victims amongst "Black Thursday"

The tragic flight that unfolded in Madang Province on the 13th of October 2011 saw 28 victims and 3 survivors was described as PNG’s worst aviation crash in history. Amongst them are two known victims (Late Mr and Mrs Bula) who where our former neighbors at Badili Green Haus.As I read the news, a feeling of sadness looms over my heart. Mr Bula was good company. We normally converse in politics, life and all sorts of issues that affect us in one way or the other. My wife is fond of flowers and would recall Mrs Bula bringing her a new range of ochid specimens from Kimbe. The news of their tragic passing leaves a vacum in the hearts of their immediate families. Since starting my blog, I’ve received over many visitors. Over the years I’ve observed that most of my visitors seemed to be requesting for forms that are not readily available online. In that senses I’ve decided to include a section called downloads. This is where most downloadable stuff that my visitors who regularly requests for are available. The popular form is the birth registration form. I‘ve also included a passport and 2012 gazettal to start off with. From time on I will add more. Kainantu Massacre

The Kainantu Massacre that happened recently though was not graphically portrayed in the local print media has recently been circulated. A view of these four images shows how barbaric the incident took place. It was a long standing law and order issue that has boiled over time. If asked who was to be blamed than obviously the government would be the ones to be outright responsible for the situation. Ever since the deterioration of law and order, policing has been a concern in this part of the Eastern Highlands Province over a number of years. The bringing in of task force members every time a situation arises obviously is short term and the cycle of repeated offenses takes place over time. Arm robbery, carjacking and intimidation of public by rascals have reached its climax to what has transpired. In this context, the authorities must realize that little towns and rural areas be fully protected and not be neglected as is the case across the vast country of ours.

Registry of Political Parties and Candidates Commission has just recently acquired new PCs for its aging sets. Apart from the new sets of computers the Local Area Network was also upgraded to a more faster speed including the provision of wireless network. This means all laptops and wireless devices would now connect to the network without the need to connect using cables. Last week the office took delivery of the new sets to help officers perform efficiently in their day to day work.

PNG GOVERNMENT GIVES IN-PRINCIPLE APPROVAL TO MERGER OF AIR NIUGINI AND AIRLINES PNG

Airlines of Papua New Guinea Limited (“Airlines PNG”) congratulates the PNG Government on the announcement today approving the in-principle merger of Air Niugini Limited, the state owned national carrier of PNG, with Airlines PNG. Airlines PNG ill work closely with the PNG Government and Air Niugini to develop the merger ransaction. A Memorandum of Understanding between the three parties will see the establishment of a Merger Implementation Office under the leadership of Rt Hon Sir Mekere Morauta, Minister for Public Enterprises. The Merger Implementation Office will establish the transaction structure and timeline for implementation, and ensure the people of PNG receive full and fair value via a fully transparent process and independent valuation of both companies. The merger is expected to bring great pportunities for the people of PNG, with immediate plans to extend aviation ervices into a range of rural areas not presently well served. Specifically Airlines PNG congratulates the PNG Government for their vision in making this possible. The merger will enable the combined airline which will operate one of the largest fleet of aircraft in the South Pacific, to better cover an extensive range of international and domestic destinations, serving locations from Singapore right down to small villages in PNG. A larger and stronger national carrier is also expected to provide increased employment opportunities for PNG staff following from the expansion of operations and the internalisation of certain support services which are currently provided off shore. The merger remains subject to the approval of Airlines PNG shareholders and approval of the final transaction by the Government, together with all other necessary corporate, regulatory and third party approvals. Airlines PNG’s Board remains committed to maximising value for its shareholders.This
will continue to be the central premise upon which the merger transaction will be evaluated. Airlines PNG will keep the market informed of further developments with the merger transaction as appropriate.

PNG FM launches new radio station

PNG FM the mother company of Nau FM and Yumi FM had just recently launched another radio station. This time its market group is targeted at around 25yr and over. Launched during the independence long weekend on the 16th of September by popular radio host, Justin Kili, most of the songs goes as far as the 60s, 70s,80s and the 90s. You can tune in on the FM band of 101.0 mhz. It is currently heard in Port Moresby and Lae but soon to roll out to other major centres around the country.

As we approach Independence day celebrations, there are many events that will take place around the country. Here in the nation’s capital the streets are all lined up with the PNG flag. There are events already planned and is out on the media for NCD. There will be a float in the morning going around the city. Most celebrations will be at Jack Pidik Park where traditional singsings, choir, concerts and art & craft market, flower displays and Governors fund raising ball.Celebrations will start on the 15th of September with float around the city. followed by a live concert. Friday will see singsing groups from the 20 provinces led by the Police band. Official Celebrations will begin with the National Athem and Pledge. This will be followed by and an aerial show "Wan Kantri". After the offical ceremony there will be live band concert led by Moses Tau until 8 in the evening with a spectacular fire works. Saturday will see the continuation of celebration and should end in the afternoon. Happy Independence Papua New Guinea!

I guess he put his hands into the wrong pocket this time and paid the ultimate price. This occurred recently at four mile bus stop Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

Had the honor of working with a fine gentleman who hails from East Sepik Province. Though looking frail and old with a scruffy appearance, one would be surprise of the old man’s rich background that began as a young man. I was surprised one morning when he was doing his usual office rounds that he did stop for a chat. The usual morning greetings began and we engaged in a full conversation. Hes being to my village and stayed there for an year he tells me. One story led to the other and I realized that this old man was no ordinary man. He was indeed a sailor. He has been to the four corners of the globe sailing on huge ocean liners. After many years of working, he has decided to quit as his ailing body is not strong enough anymore. We did a farewell reception for him on the 2nd of September 2011. The Registrar on behalf of the Registry Office thanked him for his services to the organization and wished him well for the future. Noki as he is known, Farewell and happy retirement!.

In the hussles and bussles of Port Moresby where leaders are still mingling around the corridors of power life still goes on. Port Moresby continues to see changes and its coming one after the other. As the city grows, so to are the pressures of infrastructures such as roads. Linking the Hiritano and Magi Highway the section of the Hubert Murray Highway along the NBC studios is been upgraded to cater for a double lane road. This once busy route which was the only way to Jacksons International Airport is now keeping up to its reputation as one of the first established Highway in Papua New Guinea. With its origins starting from Konedobu and runs along the famous Ela Beach, this road runs past koki/badili to two mile, three and four mile up to five mile along towards six mile 7 mile all the way past Erima. It meets the Hiritano highway and continues all the way up to Sogeri in the Central Province. What many do not notice is the name that still reminds us of colonial imperialism. Born of an Irish background his family migrated to Australia in the early 1800s and settled. Mostly educated in Sydney, Hubert wanted adventure and headed for the territory of Papua. He was appointed Acting Administrator in 1907 and Lieutenant-Governor in 1908, a position he held until his death at Samarai in 1940. When Murray first went to Papua there were 64 white residents. There were 90,000 square miles (230,000 km2) of territory, much of it unexplored jungle land, with many native tribes of whom some were cannibals and head-hunters. He set himself to understand the native mind, and found that an appeal to vanity was often more effective than punishment. Murray eventually wiped out cannibalism and head-hunting, largely by ridiculing tribes that followed those practices, and praising those that did not. His lagacy left behind is the naming of an Army barracks, the leading "international" primary school, (now called Ela/Murray International) the Hubert Murray Stadium and a highway are all named after him.

Kokopo Communiqué and what it means

Since the signing of the Kokopo Communiqué, a whole new dimension has been rewritten for political parties in Papua New Guinea. The Communiqué enables the Registrar to review the structure and OLIPPAC to go in line with the communiqué’. The conclusion of the conference saw an intergovernmental committee comprising of Ombudsman Commission, Law Reform Com, IPPCC, Justice and NRI setup to address this issues. Lately an advertisement has been put on the website and local media print calling for interested law firms or individuals with legal background to submit their interest. Right up until the election of a new prime minister, there were hints and roumors that a change of goverment was eminient. With the sock move by the opposition as well as some help of government ministers and backbenchers, the government finally was over thrown through the leadership and the man who mastermind the whole saga, Hon Belden Namah- Opposition leader. The change of government was swift, everything seems to be running normal on the streets of Port Moresby. A caretaker government was announced as early as Wednesday and by the weekend a full team of Cabinet ministers where announced.

Whilst I was at Kokopo in the East New Britain Province, I and so was my colleges were privileged to be taken around Kokopo, Rabaul and the surrounding communities in the Rabaul and Gazelle Districts. Our good friend Gordon Giuse who is the Provincial Events Director for the East New Britain Provincial Administration took us to many sites including villages in the area. Rabaul is one of many tourist destinations in Papua New Guinea. OLIPPAC CONFERENCE 2011

The 2011 OLIPPAC conference staged in Kokopo, East New Britain was a success. This conference witnessed the passing of the Kokopo Communiqué. The Communique means that there will be some amendment to the OLIPPAC law (download the here or visit www.ippcc.gov.pg). In October 2010 saw the Supreme Court nullifying some sections of OLIPPAC unconstitutional. One section which implies the restrictive movement of MPs to different parties was struck out. OLIPPAC was originally introduced to stabilize the government. The result was a two term parliament for the current government since 2002. The 4 day workshop brought together academics from Australia as well as a delegation from Vanuatu. Other NGOs included UN Women etc. The Workshop was opened by the Hon Leo Dion, Governor For East New Britain Province (ENBP) also were attended by states man including former Governor General, Sir Paulius Matane, former Prime Minister Sir Rabbie Namaliu and LLG Presidents of ENBP. Other notable figures included the former Ombudsman, Ila Geno, Prof Ted Wolfer from the Wollongong University, Dr Ray Anere, Dr Alphonse Gelu, and political party executives from around the country.

Tribute to the Late Anthony Sari

This is a special tribute to my classmate and a dear friend who tragically lost his life on the early hours of the 26th of June 2011. I have known him when we were in Community School up at Sogeri. At one stage he was my deskmate.Other classmates in the likes of Richard Opiti, Joseph Vagilama, Richard Kanimba, Simon Ledo, Emty Kiro, Noel Rogogo, Roger Avea, Desmond Sam and some others I can't barely remember. It was fun in those days. His mum taught in the local high school just a kilometer away from the school. We finished community school and proceed into high school (Richard Opiti, Noel Rogogo, Simon Ledo, Joseph Vagilama, Emty Kiro). After the full four years we parted our own ways.Both Richard and I were selected to Sogeri National High. I never knew where he ended up but i found out that he was studying at the institute where I was first employed. I left before he came in. He was employed with a local IT firm here in Port Moresby until his death. May you rest in peace, Tony...

Upcoming OLLIPAC Conference 2011

The annual OLLIPAC confernce is coming up this July starting from the 11-15. Since its inception in 2009 at Gateway Hotel in Port Moresby, the conference continues to grow with many international academics and internationally recognised political parties as far as Solomon Island, Vanuatu, Fiji as well as NGOs in the likes of UN Women,CDI to name a few. This year will be a critical one as the 2012 election is around the corner. The Kokopo Conference will see the Gaire Dialogue brought forward to all stakeholders in regards to the OLLIPAC since some section of it was ruled unconstitutional in 2010. Good old memories at Sogeri

This coming Friday is Sogeri Singsing. It brings back a couple of good memories. This was the year 1997 and 1998. The names such as Mr Vui, Mr Halasa, Mr Pogla, Mr Crook and Mrs Ahai are what I can remember so far. As those that time would recall, it was a time of transition from the old system to the new system. As you would see in the photos attached, we were the last group that didn’t have any uniforms in those days. The uniform came into effect not long after. It was a very eventful year as well. Not only did I witness the burning down of several English and math classrooms but the ethnic make up of the school stopped there. Most of the student came from different parts of the country and from the year beyond students came from either central or ncd. Most provinces by now had their own secondary schools. I have bumped into several school mates of mine but have either forgotten their names except a few who I regularly keep in touch through the email. Contact me if you know anyone in these photos

The Gaire Accord

The Gaire Accord was drawn up in the wake of the Supreme Court Decision handed down in 2010 nullifying some sections on the Organic Law on Integrity of Poltical Parties and Candidates. The four day conference that was staged at March Girls Resort, Central Province drew many International experts from Australia, PNG, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands including UNWomen, PIF Secretariat and the Pacific Commonwealth Secretariat.The Accord will lead to the Kokopo Conference where the Kokopo Communiqué will be drawn up. Highly recommended book for the working class

I've witness many public servants struggle week in week out in their finance. Many as confirmed in the two books that I read written by Tiri Kuimbakul are highly educated and go through this situation. I even witness people who are middle and low income earners falling into the same trap. This book is a must to all working class individuals. I for one has read two books so far by Tiri and it is a motivation to apply why I learnt into practice. Reading is one thing and action is another. I encourage those who are struggling to crab a copy of Tiri’s books and read through it. So far I’ve read “Be your own boss Vol 1-18 reasons why you need to seriously consider becoming self employed and minding your business” and “Young money-What working class people need to know and do to achieve financial independence and freedom”. Honourable Powes Parkop, governor of National Capital District, academics from the Australian National University,Woloongong University, participants from the UNWomen, Suva,Fiji, Electoral Commissioner and colleagues from Vanuatu, government officials, distinguished guests, ladies and gentleman, good morning and welcome to Papua New Guinea.

You know, standing here looking down at all your wise and learned faces, I feel like a novice opening batsman going out to face the might of lilie and thompson in their heyday.i must admit it is quite daunting. but today I am very happy to see you all here because today we begin a journey that will shape the political landscape of Papua New Guinea. therefore, I ask of you to be forthright, candid and sincere in your discussions. there are no rights and wrongs in this workshop – but there are suggestions to help us focus our minds in charting out the parameters for political leadership and good governance in Papua New Guinea and the region as a whole.

I am not going to pretend that we have answers to resolve our political woes in this country. what is needed is quality leadership that is honest, transparent and accountable to the people of this nation. political events in this country over the last few decades have shown otherwise, hence forcing people to cryout foul to the leadership, and demeaning the office of the highest political post in this nation. i ask you, my fellow countrymen and women:

where do we go from here? and how do we correct the situation? do we legislate to control political behaviour and activity? just exactly what is the answer after provisions of olippac were declared unconstitutional by the supreme court?

We have gathered here, men and women of enormous talent, magnitude, depth of knowledge and wisdom to enlighten, share and debate ideas of how to move olippac forward in the 21st century. as Registrar, I now challenge this forum of eminent persons, help us to help this nation find a lasting solution that could stand the test of time irrespective of which government is in power, olippac must remain a rock, navigating the political landscape of Papua New Guinea.

I wish you all a constructive discussion and healthy debate on issues of significant importance to Papua New Guinea. the outcome of this workshop, the Gaire Accord, will serve as a template to the Kokopo Communique in July of this year.

In conclusion,let me take this opportunity to thank the Australian
government, the Australian national university and the center for democratic institutions (CDI), for their equitable participation in funding and providing highly qualified technical people to assist in the preparation of this workshop in particular, i would like to sincerely thank mr Grant Harrison from the centre for Democratic Institutions,Canberra and Dr. David Anere of IPPCC for their untiring support and efforts in navigating this entire workshop preparations and moving onto the Kokopo conference. without these two men our efforts would have been fruitless. let us give them an applause.

The workshop ended on a high note with participants enriched with the topics being presented. Policy Workshop on OLLIPPAC

The successful completion of a two day workshop in regards to OLLIPPAC(Organic Law on Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates) concluded on a very positive note. The two day workshop aimed at finding a way forward for the OLLIPPAC law that rendered parts of it unconstitutional in 2010 by the high courts.Participants at the workshops mostly comprised of academics from our NRI, CDI, University of Wollongong, Australia National Univeristy as well as observers from Vanuatu, Solomon Island and Pacific Forum Secretariat.The workshop was opened by the Governor of NCD Hon Powes Parkop. This workshop will ultimately lead to the Conference at Kokopo in July this year.

Gabagaba road in poor condition

We paid a visit to a village down the Magi Highway to prepare for an upcoming workshop. As with many services throughout the country, the deterioration in services to many rural communities has completely put a strain on many lives. The drive towards Gabagaba village from the junction which would take normally 10 minutes on a good conditioned road took nearly 20 to half an hour. This is a very common scenario in all sectors including health, education and the list goes on and on. We boast about record budget handed down year after year but nothing is to show forth in terms of basic services. The mechanism in service delivery (public services) has surely collapse or is hanging by a margin. (Pictured above is a big crater in the middle of the village)

Politics and Political Parties of Papua New Guinea

Do you know how many political parties are there in Papua New Guinea? Though small Papua New Guinea has over thirty plus parties and still growing. In 2010 two new Political Parties came into the scene. One of strong Human Rights avocate and now Governor of NCD Honorable Powes Parkop (Social Democratic Party and former Ombudsman Ila Geno (PNG Constitutional Democratic Party). Though Parkop’s Party is registered under the Registry of Political Parties and Candidates Commission, the Registrar of Political Parties recognizes Hon Parkop as an Independent Candidate. Since the decision on the Organic Law in relations to Political Parties was handed down in mid year 2010 there have been movements into other parties. According to the website you would be surprise to see who have moved to and fro. United Resource party has 4 members joining them, Puri Ruing(Dei Open), James Lagea(Kagua Erave Open), Steven Prika(South Bougainville) and Kondo Patrick(Daulo Open). Belden Namah(Vanimo Green) is the New leader for PNG Party taking over the reign of Sir Mekere Morauta(Moresby North West). Other members yet to be recognized by the Registrar are: Thomas Harokaqveh(Goroka Open), Fransis Awesa(Imbogu Open), Ferao Orimyo(Henganofi Open), Fr John Garia(Chimbu Regional), Suckling Tamanabai,(Oro Regional) Dr Sir Puka Temu(Abau Open), Koni Iguan(Markam Open) and Moses Manwau(Wewak Open) . First Home Buyers benefit from Budget change

In the handing down of the 2011 budget, if you're a first time home buyer this would be a relief to you.Generally speaking, when an employer subsidises an employee’s housing, the employee is required to pay tax on the benefit. The rate of tax payable depends on the value of the house. However, under current tax law, if your employer provides the subsidy under an approved low cost housing scheme and the value of the house is under a certain amount, you are exempt from paying tax on the benefit. You are also exempt if the amount advanced by your employer for a first home is repayable and the advances are debited against certain employee benefits, including superannuation (as is the case with the Housing Advance). From 1 January this year the Citizen Employee First Home Buyer Scheme replaces the former Low Cost Housing Scheme and the upper value of the property has been increased to K400,000, Significantly higher than the previous K75,000

Dentistry department overwhelmed with patients

The dentistry department at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) Taurama campus is overwhelmed with patients as young as two to adults every day. Patients queue up as early as 7am with lines 5 to 6 meters long. Though the wait was a bit longer this is common in all public facilities. Over the years there have been corporate assistances with evidence of signs and plaque depicting a donation or sponsor from each corporate entity. Children are free while the adults are charged a reasonable fee depending on the services provided. The medical team comprises of students gaining experience for a career ahead. Wandering around the campus, you will notice a bit of history in the buildings dating back as early as the sixties and seventies. Pic by CL mbNokia

School aged beggar in POM

As I drive past one of the busiest traffic lights (holiday Inn) in the city, a site that is becoming an all too common is of a boy sitting on the side of a traffic light begging for money. If I can recall, I believe it started with a mentally retarded fellow who normally sits waiting for vehicles passing to drop money for him. At some stages he just sleeps on the island. It may not seemed to be a great deal but what this fellows do not realize that they place themselves in a very risky situation as anytime a vehicle can loose control or a drunkard can bump into them. Coming back to the situation about the boy, this is becoming frequent as the other traffic light adjacent to the Sir John Guise Stadium is also used by boys sitting in the hot scorching sun begging. Thankfully the city of Port Moresby is nicked named the roundabout capital, not a lot of chances for these fellows to get some loose change if they were sitting at a roundabout.

The new Ela United Church rising from the rubbles

Work is underway and progressively going well.The United Church building which used to house the Assembly office has been completely renovated with tenants already moving in and using the office space.The old church which used to be on site was moved to Hanuabada village or the mission station for the United Church. In the mean time Sunday Service is being conducted at the pastors residence at Kaugere next to Badili Police Station.Picture is the foundation under construction.

The passing of Late Ricky Yopo Jnr

We attended a funeral for the late Ricky Yopo Jnr. He is the son of Richard Yopo who tragically died on Sunday 30th January 2011 in freak accident. He was 13 years of age. It was a moving occasion at the CAF Church as many who knew him expressed a very reliable, obedient and caring person he was amongst his friends and those closer to him. Amongst the mourners who attended were relatives, friends, colleges and many other people connected in some way or the other towards the Yopo family. Richard’s colleges from ANZ also attended.The body will be flown to Wabag and laid to rest in Irelya village, Wabag District on Monday 7th February 2011. Ricky is the eldest of seven siblings.

House update 3

The carpenters are back and now working full time on the house. Since my last update, there was a skeleton of beams running with the roof half done. The roofs now complete with all floors covering as well as window frames done. The sealing buttons all complete with wiring soon to take place before the walls go up. Recently the pest control did a thorough spray on all timbers and that should keep the past out for a while. Find attached is the pest control guys spraying the house. Late Roselyn Jennifer Vagi (nee Sariman)

It’s a sad occasion when a loved one passes away. We attended the funeral service of the Late Roselyn Jeniffer Vagi (nee Sariman) on the 22nd January 2011. Amongst those who attended where family, friends and relatives. Condolenses to tambu Arnold and Theresa for the lost of your beloved sister.DOB-9th Dec 1958 DOD-13 Jan 2011.The funeral was held at Don Bosco-Gabutu and later taken to Koukou for her final resting place. Happy belated 2011 my followers. This is the second update on my story about our house at Koukou and as you can see its nearly completed. The carpenters are back from their Christmas break. The roof is being worked on currently and soon the flooring will be done. It is anticipated that everything should be completed by March 2011.

We had the privilege of going down to Kimmy’s mums village thanks to Varokou Construction Ltd. Kim’s dad lent us a truck for the trip. We overnight and had a little anniversary kaikai for the lapun called Kariko who had in one stage had a hand in her mother’s upbringing. Though it was a new experience maybe the culture shock but looking at one issue is land and this is common amongst a lot of areas in Papua New Guinea.

Looking at bubu, shes as strong for somene in her 80s. Though she can’t walk these days, she still is mobile crawlling along the house from her bedroom to the living room. She even can move up and down the 15 step house that she is living in. Coming to know her over the past couple of days is a privillage. GovNet online finally connect.

We have finally being connected to the Gov Net network thanks to the Finance IT Team (Dave, Mike and Patricia) We also have access to the gov email system which over time will be more cost effective than the current hosts of our emails. An ISP subcontractor for finance did the cabling and as a bonus connect two other departments within the Kumul Haus building. We now have access to email and alesco payroll system. We are anticipating for PGAS next year.

With the year drawing to a close the Registry Office of Poltical Parties exchanged gifts in a small but significant ceremony withnessed in the office as a token of appreciation for their effort in the success of 2010 year. At the same time I'm going for my well deserved break and looking forward for it. This gives me time to catch up on other things that I have been putting off for a while.

Accidently I happen to stumble across some sites that gave an insight on how this Solien person came to Port Moresby. In The Late 1800's, When Foreigners Were Exploring Papua, Jimmy Malay Came As Part Of That Wave, In Search of Bechedemer + Sandalwood. I wanted to know how and where was bubu Nellie’s roots and how she became one of the Soliens. I’ve discovered that she comes from the generation of the first wife (Biria Vediho) of James Peter Solien or Jimmy Malay as he is known and had nine children. They are as listed

Now bubu Nellie got married to bubu Peter Sariman and that is where the Sariman comes into picture. There is awfully alot of infomation to digest but I'll stop here.Another thing about this research is the most of the names continue to be repetative or past on from generations to generations making is a little bit confusing at start. These are what I have dug out so far. Hopefully I’ll try to do more research and come up with a family tree but I believe that’s a mammoth task. Kaksy of Varokou

One would mistaken the name “Kaksy “ for a human being but no its not. Kaksy is a muruk or cassowary in English. Kaksy can be found at Varokou Construction Office site. Now knowing that my son loves animals, one wouldn’t guess what the first question that was asked as soon as he spoted Kaksy. “Can we keep him?” was what he mentioned first before curiously asking other questions about its sex, what he eats and the list goes on and on. Jeremiah already owns a turtle and a parrot. We obviously don’t have space for another additional animal. Making Manus Basket

Meet Rachael Pokiau from Waratalai village in the Manus south coast. Every day as we go about our usual daily routine she sits at a corner of a flat at Green Haus in Badili weaving her baskets. She has been in Port Moresby for a month now and I couldn’t let this opportunity go but ask her how she makes those wonderful Manus basket. Like all the art of making something, her skills and knowledge had been handed down to her by her mother. As she explains it starts off with husking a special type of tree that is in the bush. They let it lie in water for a month until it becomes rotten. After that it is dried and stripped into small pieces enough to start weaving. There are two types, the small one is called Drobanahin and the big one is called Drobagungan. As in many cultures in Papua New Guinea, baskets were mainly used for bride prize and special occasions as well as for carrying items.

Civil Registry goes electronic

The Civil Registry Office within the Department of Community Development which was formerly known as Department of Welfare recenlty converted to electronic registering of forms for Death, Birth and Marriages. Once recieved, the lodgement is inputted into the system and registered and given a number. Upon collection the number is scanned and is pulled up for collection. This system is in line with the recently upgraded IT system that was launched by the Minister, Hon Dame Carol Kidu two months ago.

Successful BRIGDE workshop concludes in Port Moresby

The BRIDGE workshop run by UNIFEM ended on a very successful note on the 22 October 2010. The two week workshop saw participants from different backgrounds participate with the aim to become facilitators of the BRIDGE program. The program saw twenty participants at the beginning however eighteen successfully completed the program and received their certificates. REFURBISHED BRANCH LAUNCHED

Recently the ANZ Lae branch was refurbished and jointly launched by senior executives of ANZ Vishnu Mohan and Michael Rowland. The occasion also saw a gala dinner later that evening at the Lae International Hotel. ANZ is celebrating its centenary anniversary of hundred years in Papua New Guinea.

2010 technology upgrade for Registry of Political Parties Commission

We finally received our much awaited server from Datec. The IBM x3400 server is a SBS 2008 Server that comes with the usual backup media and utilities. The delivery of this equipment will compliment what has been established in the office. So far over the past 12 months other upgrades include:

 Development of an IPPCC Website
 Alesco Payroll system onsite processing
 LAN Setup
 Resources and file sharing as well as printer sharing facilities
 Heavy duty copier/fax/printer/scanner

The next 12 months (2011) would see other major upgrades:
 Upgrade of PABX
 Replacement of old pcs
 Fast Internet connectivity (broadband)
 Email connectivity (Gov net)

Other planned activity involves the development of an intranet site and party registry system. These are all subject to timing and workload.

Poverty a reality in Papua New Guinea

Whilst I write about the good things that are happening in our big city, I must be honest that with developments there are also associated problems that comes along with it. It is disturbing to see children begging on the streets of Port Moresby and other major centers but yes this is increasingly becoming a norm in our own country. With the migration of people into urban areas from the rural settings, this has placed added pressure on the services and infrastructure that is currently being neglected. Many critics will argue that poverty is not as prevalent in our country but it can come in many forms whether it is lack of services such as health, education and the breakdown of law and order. This trend that was once thought to be confined in urban areas is now creeping into the rural settings. Today there is no such thing as a free ride. Everything that is done under the sun is for a form of payment whether big or small. The world of materialism and capitalism is being imitated by what we read in the papers and see on TV sets. Whilst PNG is a signatory to many international conventions, one such important document is the Millennium Development Goal (MDG). We have less than five years to meet our target and at the pace we’re going, it is a massive challenge for our government

Nonu School Celebrates Papua New Guinea’s 35th Independence in style

This year saw Papua New Guinea turn 35 years of self governance since gaining independence from Australia. Schools throughout the country celebrated this occassion. Nonu was no exception as it had its students perform traditional dances. Jeremiah was part of a dance group that sang and danced New Ireland. Students were grouped into four regions New Guinea Islands, Southern, Momase and the Highlands Region.

Mortuary Feast held for Late Mrs Elizabeth Anere

Dr David Anere had a mortuary feast over the weekend to mark the passing of his wife. Late Mrs Elizabeth Anere passed away early this year. The feast was witnessed by both Dr’s relatives and Late Mrs Anere’s relatives.Staff from Registry of Political Parties Commission also witness the occassion. As a token of appreciation some food including a pig was presented to his late wife’s relatives. On behalf of the family son Joelson and daughter Margaret echoed sentiments of how much their mother was as a role model in their life. They thanked their late mother’s relatives for giving her to them. Dr's brother officially handed over the food to the Hula family.

Sir Kina Bona appoints working committee to review the Organic Law on the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates

On Wednesday the 8th September,2010 the Registrar of the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates Commission, Sir Kina Bona brought a number of representatives from the National Research Institute, the Center for Democratic Institutions at the Australian National University, Canberra and staff of the Commission to organize a special Policy Workshop to be attended by selected experts and consultants both from within the country and abroad to find solutions to the OLIPPAC situation in the light of the recent Supreme Court decision.

Sir Kina said that “We must take time and careful consideration to do this properly and not rush for a quick fix solution which might not be in the interests of the Nation. Political stability and the integrity of politicians and political parties are of paramount importance and therefore we need to ensure that how we go about achieving that goal is proper and legally correct as required by the Constitution. We must research and critique the options or proposals available to us. We need to consult the views of all sectors of the society which is not an easy task. Political parties will no doubt be major participants in this exercise.”

In the interim, a Working Committee comprising of Dr. Ray Anere, Dr. Musawe Sinebare, Dr. Alphonse Gelu from the National Research Institute, Dr. Grant Harrison from the Center of Democratic Institutions, Australian National University, Dr. Orovu Sepoe, Dr. David Anere and Peter Wotomu from the Registry. Other members of the Working Committee have been identified but have yet to confirm their participation. This Committee will begin the task of planning and organizing the Special Policy Workshop to be followed by a National Forum/Dialogue immediately after the meeting.

The task of the Policy Workshop will be to engage in a comprehensive political and institutional review and to brainstorm the issues at hand and to come up with tangible and meaningful solutions. Some of the crucial questions facing OLIPPAC are: What should we do next, now that the teeth of the guard dog have been removed? Do we legislate again and if so what and how do we do that without breaching the Constitutional rights of Members of Parliament?

The Policy Workshop which is tentatively scheduled for the 21st – 23rd February, 2011will be followed by a National Dialogue/Forum the aim of which is to seek public opinion for an alternative solution.

Registry staff gets first prize for 2010

The staging of the PNG Association of Administrative Professionals (PNGAAP) was held on the 24th- 27th of August 2010 in Kokopo, East New Britain Province. In attendance were various administrative professionals from various government departments including NGOs from across Papua New Guinea. Amongst the participants were the Registry staffs (Janet Mallian, Henao Lister, Lorraine Wotomu, Marie Fraghi and Susan John) from the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates Commission (IPPCC). A lot of important topics were discussed at the forum including roles of globalization, admin professionals’ roles, challenges and changing roles of admin professionals in national development. There were a number of invited speakers including Secretary of Works, Mr Joel Luma, Ms Petrolina Amon from the National Disaster Office and Ms Emma Kaul, President of Women in Maritime. The conference also witnessed the launch of the East New Britain Chapter of the PNGAAP.

Every year awards are presented for the Outstanding Administrative Professionals and this year saw Marie Fraghi an Executive Assistant within the Funding and Disclosure Division of IPPCC bagged the first prize in the junior category. The first runner up went to the Gas Project Office while the second runner up went to Office of Rural Development. In the senior category the first placing went to Department of Personnel Management followed by the first runner up from Transport Department and Walo Maguli from the Department of Prime Minister taking the second runner up.

Catching up with old childhood friends

Caught up with my childhood friends from Gaire village in the Central Province while attending a workshop at March Girls Resort. Siru the youngest is married to the March Girls Resort owner. I accidentally bumped into whilst looking for bottled water at the resort’s canteen.Siru’s brother and sister (Iamo and Nou )who coincidentally turned up to see him was a bonus for me. Meeting all three brought a lot of memories back to the cool misty mountains of Sogeri. Their dad and mine worked together at Elcom now known as PNG Power. Their Dad retrenched first before dad in 2008

NONU CELEBRATES FATHERS DAY 2010

Nonu celebrated a Father’s Day Assembly on Friday 03rd September 2010. Each cluster performed an item. Jeremiah’s group presented the dance by Sakira’s 2010 Soccer World cup dance WakaWaka much to the crowd’s delight. The school also had cakes to mark this occasion.

Party Executives attend workshop

A five day intensive workshop was held on the 16 – 20th of August in the Central Province focused on Gender and Election which saw political party executives and staff of the Integrity of Political Party and Candidates Commission attending. Facilitators and organizers of the workshop UNIFEM marked this occasion as a first of its kind in the Pacific to be run by the UN Organisation. In closing the workshop, the Registrar of Political Parties Sir Kina Bona encouraged more workshops to focus political parties on issues that enable them to develop appropriate policies and select quality candidates to assume leadership roles at the national level or the local level governments. The workshop concluded with presentations of certificates to participants and also recognized one of the facilitators who is fully accredited as a UNIFEM facilitator.

Law and Order is a social problem in every country. As we speak a crime is committed every second of every minute around the world. The trend of crime is changing, some simple and some more complexes that involve a number of individuals or certain groups of people. Port Moresby is no exception and there are some measures that you can take in order to avoid this.
Those that commit this act usual act on individuals that are vulnerable and less likely to defend themselves. Here are some measures you can take and avoid this but this is not a guarantee as it can even happen to anyone in the most unlikely places and least expected.
Here are some tips:
Using Public Motor Vehicle (PMV)
1. When deciding to catch a PMV, always make sure that your valuable are stored in a non exposable bag. Example it is not advisable to carry a bilum from the coastal area as it is exposed and everything that is inside can be seen. Carry a highlands bilum made of wool where nothing is exposed.
2. Ladies especially are encouraged to go in groups or with older female companion or wantoks during the day.
3. When walking it is good to keep your bags or bilum in front of you so that you are in perfect view of your valuables.
4. If confronted and outnumbered, don’t resist but give them your valuables. It is better to be safe than sorry.
5. Avoid crowded areas as it is potential that most rascals strike in those places
6. In the bus it is always advisable to close windows or avoid sitting next to windows as most thugs strike when the victim is unsuspecting. (eg snatching of mobile phones and bags)
7. It is advisable not to be on the mb phone when on the bus especially when sitting on the window seat.
8. Avoid carrying a lot of things when deciding to use this alternative transport.
**Please note that this is applicable mostly in urban PMV routes (Port Moresby and Lae) and doesn’t apply to rural PMVs**
Using vehicle
1. Always keep your doors locked at all times.
2. When approaching roundabout make sure your windows are fully wind up or 80% up to avoid thugs putting their hand through
3. Drive in more common and more useable roads. Avoid back roads and less frequently used roads
4. Avoid driving late at nights especially when you leave in a resident that have a gate on the main road.
5. When driving pay attention to vehicles. If you suspect a vehicle following you avoid heading home but drive around for a while or head straight to a police station.
6. Avoid leaving valuables in your car as it attracts attention. Store in the boot of your car or have someone stay in the car. Even a tinted glass isn’t guaranteed
7. When travelling around, it is good to have company especially boys or men with you.
8. When driving into a neighborhood that is unfamiliar, try to get a local (someone who lives around that area) to accompany you.

Living in a community or compound
Get to know your community and local neighborhood that you reside in. Have some relatives live at home when taking a vacation or going out for a while.

Believe it or not that’s what this house in the picture is worth. The story is the same everywhere you go around Port Moresby. The inflammatory figure of real estate is so wide that real estate companies are laughing all the way to the bank. For ordinary citizens, this is by far too much and unlikely to be affordable for most. I had an agent call me up to inspect the property at Hohola 2 and judging from the house itself it wasn’t worth the cost. An insider in the real estate at one stage informed me that this was due to the normal market force of demand and supply. When demand is high and supply is low, the price of things rise but the opposite is demand is low and supply is high , there is a tendency the prices will fall.
